Hundreds are gathered in Saskatoon today to hear the best ways to deal with and prevent diabetes.

The Canadian Diabetes Association is hosting an Aboriginal gathering focused on traditional living in a modern world.

Bev Whitehawk, who is director of primary health care for the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, shared her success story of changing her lifestyle to become more active.

Whitehawk says she went to a diabetes screening event and discovered she weighed 210 lbs. and had a 55″ waist circumference.

She says she has lost 60 lbs. since then.

Whitehawk says people need to also take care of their mental health, which will help them eat properly and be more active, as well.
