Transportation Woes Mount For Northern Village

The community of Cumberland House is facing transportation problems these days.
The local airstrip has been closed for two weeks due to water-problems that have made the landing strip soft.
Mayor Andy McKay says right now planes can’t land, including air ambulances.
To top things off the road into the community is also extremely rough.
He says it’s so bad a woman was forced to give birth in the community because it took too long for the ambulance, which was coming from Nipawain to reach her.
McKay says he’s talked to highways officials about the situation, but he’s not sure what’s going to be done about it:
“well he says there’s not much we can do with that road right now because of the frost that’s in the ground but I said to him we can’t wait until someone gets injured on that road and it’s a big safety issue I told him.”
McKay adds he’s hopeful someone in the government will recognize they need help.
