Vets To Be Honoured At Batoche
Friday, July 22, 2011 at 14:05
Metis veterans will be honoured this weekend during a special ceremony at Batoche.
At least 15 vets of World War 2 will be on hand for the event which begins 2:00 tomorrow afternoon.
The ceremony is all part of this year’s Back to Batoche annual celebration.
Alex Maurice is one of the people helping coordinate the event.
He says the biographies of the world war 2 vets will be read, then a wreath will be laid, followed by the playing of taps and a 21 gun salute.
Maurice says he feels more recognition is being paid to Metis vets these days and he’s glad to see that.
If you’re planning on going to Batoche today don’t forget your spoon.
Organizers of this year’s Back to Batoche festival are hoping to break the World record for the largest number of people playing a wooden spoon at the same time.
Jimmy Durocher is one of the people who helped launch the idea two years ago.
Durocher, better known as the “spoon man” at this year’s festival says they need everyone they can get.
An effort is being made to jog the memories of Metis elders and citizens at this year’s Back to Batoche Festival.
It’s all connected to a cemetery at Fish Creek.
Efforts are being made to identify many of the people who are buried there.
Sheila Schmutz is a Saskatoon resident who has travelled to Batoche.
She says she’s hoping to talk to some of the ancestors of people who are buried there.
For anyone who is not going to Batoche this year but wants to learn more information a website has been set up.
It’s located at www.findagrave.com
You simply type in “fish creek” into the search box to see more information about the cemetery.
