Water Still Rising at Cumberland House

Rising flood waters have yet to peak at Cumberland House.

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority originally forecast for the peak to happen at Cumberland Lake over the July long weekend.

But, Dale Hjertaas says that peak still hasn’t arrived and is expected late this week or early next.

He says water is currently sitting at about 268.2 metres and is expected to reach 268.4 metres.

When Cumberland House flooded in 2005, flood waters peaked at 267.7 metres.

Meantime, with the exception of Cumberland House, operations to deal with flooding are winding down across the province.

Hjertaas says it’s standard practice to have a review of how smoothly things ran over the past couple of months.

He says with hindsight, the watershed authority would have, for example, been able to better prepare for four or five flood peaks on the Souris River; however, he says the real question is how well did authorities respond given the circumstances.
