Wild Rice Harvesters Buying Insurance Decreasing

It seems wild rice insurance is getting slightly less popular each year.

Just 70 producers signed up for coverage in 2011.

That’s 8 fewer harvesters than 2010, and 20 fewer than 2009.

Jeff Morrow is one of the managers at Saskatchewan Crop Insurance.

He explains buyers of this year’s coverage mainly came from one area: the western region with 48.

There are seven in the central region and 15 in the eastern.

Morrow adds the insurance will cover roughly 18,000 acres.

Wild rice growers have been dealing with large inventories and poor prices in recent years.
