Work Continues on Highway 123

Dry weather and recent work by highway crews has helped improve the prognosis for Highway 123.

 

The road to Cumberland House is said to be quite muddy right now but is open to light trucks.

 

Highways spokesman Doug Wakabayashi says they’re hopeful they can upgrade the road to good condition within the next couple of days.

 

An official with the ministry of social services says having the road open has enabled fresh supplies to enter the community.

 

That is considered quite important as residents wait for the water to crest sometime around the middle of next week.

 

FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild is calling on the Federal government to help First Nations that have already flooded, as well as Cumberland House

 

Lonechild says there needs to be a long-term strategy to address annual flooding, with resources and commitments from both the Federal and provincial governments.

 

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says he welcomes input from Chief Lonechild.

 

Wall says safety is a priority and highway workers are trying to keep the road passable.

 

Wall says the Minister of Public Safety will be travelling to Cumberland House tomorrow.
