The president of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation is assuring commercial fishers in the province that his organization will still be buying fish from Saskatchewan after April 1st.

Next spring is the target date for fishers in the province to exit out from under the FFMC’s monopoly over sales of inland fish caught commercially.

The FFMC’s John Wood says his group still intends to buy catch from fishers in certain areas.

But he stresses, without the obligations owed to Saskatchewan fishers under monopoly rules, they will be buying only in places where it is profitable.

Wood adds he knows there are some fishers who want to stay with the marketing corporation and take advantage of its services.

He also says the corporation won’t have a field agent in Saskatchewan after April 1st — rather, those duties will be handled by staff in Alberta or Manitoba.
