Fishers Preparing For Life After FFMC Monopoly

Optimism is brewing for a commercial fisher from Reindeer Lake.

Tom Bird says he’s excited about a visit to the local area by a U.S. businessman.

Bird says the entrepreneur held a meeting with local fishers about the possibility of buying fish from Saskatchewan harvesters by next April, when the fishers will be free from the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation’s monopoly.

Bird says he knows northern Saskatchewan fishers still don’t have a processing plant to call their own.

But he feels they could make things work if they started off slow, like renting some warehouse space in Prince Albert.

Bird admits a lot of questions will have to be answered between now and then, but he says he is starting to get some hope.
