More than 3,200 hampers with fresh produce are going to community groups in Saskatoon, thanks to a garden that is tended by inmates at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre under the Urban Camp program.
For the second year in a row, produce from the garden is given to the Saskatoon Food Bank for its hampers, as well as to St. Mary’s Community School for its lunch program.
Paul Merriman, CEO of the food bank, says it’s clear that the program also means a lot to the participants, whose garden is meticulous.
The Urban Camp program has been around for 29 years and is meant to provide inmates who are nearing release with work experience.
