Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation has announced plans to host a network-wide radiothon to raise funds for the new Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital.
MBC is partnering with Cameco and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan to broadcast the day-long fundraising drive on November 25th.
Gary Merasty is Cameco’s vice-president of corporate social responsibility.
Merasty says the pediatric utilization statistics in the province show that northerners, and First Nations and Metis citizens need to do their part to raise funds for this project.
He says the percentage of use of pediatric services by Aboriginal people is “astronomical” — up to 40%, by his estimation — even though First Nations and Metis people make up less than 15% of the province’s population.
The provincial government and the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority previously announced a $200 million commitment to build a children’s hospital next to Royal University Hospital by 2016.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation has committed to raise $25 million towards the facility.
