Justice Murray Sinclair from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was in Regina today giving the keynote address at a national conference of judges.

Sinclair was appointed to the TRC in 2009.

He says judges must learn about the history of the residential schools and the how the impacts are continuing to affect those in the courts.

Sinclair says it’s important for judges to keep the needs of Aboriginal victims of crime in mind when wanting to “assist” Aboriginal offenders.

He also says the Metis who were recently recognized for their experience in church-run day schools are also welcome to come to the TRC to tell their stories.

Sinclair says a report from the TRC will be released at the end of the year.
