The University of Saskatchewan and the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs are teaming up to help youth become teachers.
They’ve launched the Indian Teacher Education Program in North Battleford.
Spokeswoman Melanie Kahpeaysewat says this is the first time it’s ever been offered in the Battlefords.
“We’re really excited about it. We’re hoping to offer more classes, as elective classes, if this one is successful for the first year.”
The partnership was celebrated Wednesday.
A traditional feast was held, and several officials gave speeches.
About 50 people from as far away as Ermineskin are taking the three-year course.
