A significant flag-raising ceremony took place this morning in Regina.

A Treaty 4 flag was raised at Regina City Hall.

Cultural adviser Elmer Eashappie says this is the first time a Canadian government anywhere has chosen to fly a treaty flag.

Eashappie says it has been a long time in the making to acknowledge First Nations in this way.

He says he developed a rapport with Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco over the years by advising the mayor on First Nations culture.

Eashappie says flying the flag was a promise he made to the late elder Gordon Oakes, who passed away in 2002.

Treaty 4 was signed on September 15th, 1874 at Fort Qu’Appelle.

There are 50 First Nations represented by Treaty 4, the majority of which are in Saskatchewan.
