The president of the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan says he’s hoping this spring’s general election will allow unregistered Metis citizens to vote at the ballot box.
Robert Doucette says the final decision isn’t up to him, but that’s generally what he’d like to see happen:
“I believe, it’s just my own opinion, I think it’ll have to be another declaration-based election where people can walk up and declare that they are metis because we simply haven’t registered enough people.”
Doucette says he’s hoping a lot of young Metis get involved in the spring vote and let their names stand for various positions.
At the same time, he’s hoping the two levels of government can be persuaded to help fund the vote.
He adds he also has decided to run for another term.
