Liberal MP Ralph Goodale says he hopes the party’s new membership rules allow more participation by Aboriginal people.
The Liberals held their annual convention last weekend in Ottawa.
The party voted to allow non-members to vote in national leadership campaigns and participate in local meetings.
The only stipulation is that they not be card-carrying members of another party, and that they sign a form pledging support towards the Liberals.
Goodale says the move is intended to open up the doors to a lot of people who never felt part of the establishment to begin with.
The party also tweaked its nomination rules.
Goodale says a party leader will only be able to hand a nomination to a candidate if the entire executive agrees the move is necessary.
He feels this should put a check or balance on the practice.
