Officials with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band appear to be changing their approach to dealing with stray dogs in the community.
In a statement, Chief Tammy Cook-Searson says the problem of roaming and abandoned dogs is a “very real safety issue” for band members.
Cook-Searson says the band is now working with La Ronge-based Northern Animal Rescue.
The chief says a plan and protocol are being worked out to see the dogs picked up by a dog control officer and then turned over to the organization.
Earlier this month, the band announced that a dog cull would be conducted to deal with problem animals — but the chief says the cull has been called off.
