The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is taking steps to curb the number of unwanted dogs in the community.

The band is partnering up with Northern Animal Rescue to find homes for stray dogs instead of having to cull them.

Chief Tammy Cook-Searson says they are giving the group access to hay and dog food.

They are also going to start taking pictures of rescued dogs and paste them on a website in the hopes the dogs will be adopted.

Meantime, the chief says at least one dog was picked up in a recent cull on the reserve:

“I know that during the week that the cull was made that one child was bitten and now we have that dog and it’s quarantined.  So it will be quarantined for ten days, tested for rabies and destroyed.”

Cook-Searson says they will also be reviewing some dog bylaws.
