It seems northern Saskatchewan has a lot in common with some parts of northern Europe.
A professor from the University of Saskatchewan’s International Centre for Northern Governance and Development is studying the similarities between parts of Norway and Sweden with northern Saskatchewan.
Greg Poelzer has been travelling to these areas for several years now to research the issue first-hand.
Poelzer notes parts of northern Norway were economically damaged by the worldwide financial meltdown of 2008.
As a result, he says some communities that normally rely on forestry and mining have turned to the high-tech sector for jobs and are generating millions of dollars each year with these ventures.
Poelzer says it just shows what the high-tech sector can do for communities that are more isolated than their southern counterparts.
