One of three men charged following a riot in La Loche last year has been committed to stand trial.
22-year-old Deano LaPrise is facing a total of 11 charges, including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, participating in a riot, arson, causing a disturbance and obstructing justice.
His trial is scheduled for April 9th in La Loche, and he remains in custody.
The incident started when emergency personnel were attending to an unconscious man who was injured after crashing his ATV in a ditch in the early morning hours of September 30th.
Police and ambulance personnel had cans, bottles and other debris thrown at them by several people attending two house parties — believing police were responsible for the man’s injuries.
A crowd of between 50 and 70 people later surrounded the community’s hospital, forcing Mounties and hospital staff to barricade the doors.
The RCMP also used pepper spray on the crowd.
The ambulance was heavily damaged, while a police truck was destroyed by fire.
Two other men are facing similar charges, and are due back in court next month.
