Two communities in the province’s north have moved onto the next phase of a process designed to see whether or not they want to host a nuclear waste storage site.
Mike Krizanc of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization says both Creighton and the English River First Nation have moved on to the third stage.
Krizanc explains this involves more detailed studies of the geology in the area, as well as a look at the social impacts a repository might have.
Jobs and a variety of other factors will all be considered:
“There might be other pressures on the community. They’ll have to determine the things they consider important for themselves . . . things that they value and how the project, if it were to go ahead, might impact those things.”
He adds consultants from the NWMO will work with the communities throughout the process.
