The National Panel on First Nations education has completed its final report.

For the last several months a three-member panel has crisscrossed the country gathering information on how to improve the education system on reserve.

Lead panelist Scott Haldane says they have come up with 5 recommendations.

These include the establishment of a child-centred First Nations education act, the creation of a national commission, that regional school boards or similar groups be supported by the feds, the creation of an accountability framework and reporting system so success stories in First Nations Schools can be heard about and more federal funding for schools:

“We’ve made some longer-term recommendations around the way in which the funding of First Nations education would be calculated.  We are assuming that there will be a willingness to look at our recommendations seriously.”

The report was formally presented this morning in Ottawa to Indian Affairs minister John Duncan and AFN chief Shawn Atleo.
