Recent census figures are out and show that by most accounts Saskatchewan is a booming place to be.

The government says the provincial population grew by sixty-five thousand people between 2006 and 2011.

The official total for the whole province is one million and thirty-three thousand people.

Saskatchewan cities grew by 8.4 percent while towns grew by 8 percent.

First Nations grew by 15.7 percent and northern communities grew by 3.2 percent.

Not every northern town reported growth though.

La Ronge saw its population downgraded from a mark of 2,725 people in 2006 to 2,304 people in 2011.

Mayor of the community, Thomas Sierzycki , says he believes the census figures are deeply flawed.

He adds he has also heard reports from community members questioning their accuracy:

“Everything from being double-counted, to not being counted at all, to not being able to access the online section or totally being ignored.  So we are concerned with that and will be launching a municipal census of our own in order to combat the issue and hopefully get an appeal from the government.”

The mayor adds the issue is deeply important because governments aren’t prone to handing out money to shrinking communities.

Creighton, Big River, Beauval, Cumberland House, Pinehouse  and Stony Rapids also saw declines according to Stats Can.
