The Muskowekwan First Nation is expanding the amount of land a potash company can explore.
Encanto Potash Corporation says it has been given the green light to add significant new lands to the current Joint Venture Agreement with the band.
The additional lands will be part of the band’s land designation vote on February 25th.
Members voted 80% in favour of the proposal last November — but didn’t get enough voters out for it to count.
A simple majority is all that is required in this month’s vote.
The two parties are hoping to find enough potash to start a mine in the area.
The additional lands include 42,000 acres, over half of which is from Treaty Land Entitlement.
In a release, Chief Reg Bellerose says they are hoping the move will translate into the world’s first potash mine on First Nations soil.
