The recent work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has sparked a review within Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education.
On Friday, the TRC released its interim report which called for provinces to review their curriculum to see whether or not the legacy of residential schools was being included.
Simone Gareau is an executive director with Saskatchewan Education.
Gareau says her ministry has begun to look at its content.
She says Native Studies 10 explores residential schools in two of the four chapters.
As well, Gareau says the issue is touched on through treaty education courses in some other classes.
Gareau adds she is not sure how long the review will take.
A commissioner with the TRC said at least one territory was looking at making residential school teachings a compulsory element in high schools.
