A Stony Rapids man says his brother ended up in a mental hospital after being hit by a teacher at the Stony Rapids Day School.
Gilbert Mercredi shared that history during today’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearing in Stony Rapids.
He said his brother, Eugene, was playing with a toy plane with a girl when the teacher hit him in the temple with a heavy book cover.
Mercredi says he saw his brother later, but he wasn’t the same.
“He looked right through me. He wasn’t actually . . . didn’t actually focus on me when I wanted to talk to him, communicate. It was all gone.”
The TRC will host its next Saskatchewan event in Onion Lake in early April.
