Two dozen students from the Keeseekoose First Nation are completing an introduction to agriculture course today.

The nine-week program was a partnership involving the band, Lakeland College, Parkland College and the Inroads to Agriculture Institute.

The students have been receiving classroom instruction and practical experience in agriculture and agri-business industries.

Classes were held on the reserve.

Parkland spokesperson Darrell Landels says there is a need for farm workers in the Yorkton-Kamsack region:

“The average age of a farm worker/labour worker is around 55 to 60 years old.  So, it doesn’t take a lot to figure out that that’s going to be pretty soon a lot of positions are going to come open in this area — and there are already some there already.”

Landels says the students are now looking for employment.
