Residents of the Shoal Lake Cree Nation are being invited to take part in the “Food From the Creator” program.
The band has received $4,000 from the Heart & Stroke Foundation to set up physical activity and healthy eating events.
Organizer Annel Bear says they are making an effort to reach youth not involved in other programs:
“We (are) targetting at-risk youth that do not attend school regularly — because sometimes they get missed because in the school programming, they are open to the youth who are at school. But in this case, we’re including everyone.”
Bear says the one-year program will include fishing trips, moose and duck hunting, hide tanning and lessons on wild meat preparation and storage — using knowledge from elders in the community.
