Police and the fire commissioner’s office are investigating a suspicious grass fire on the Sweetgrass First Nation.

It is one of two fires that hit the reserve over the past three days.

One fire broke out Monday and jumped across Highway 40.

Firefighters thought they had it doused, but it re-ignited.

At about 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, the highway was closed when propane tanks were threatened but couldn’t be emptied.

Residents of at least one house were evacuated.

A second fire broke out about three days ago in the north end of the reserve.

Sweetgrass Chief Lori Whitecalf says the cause of that one isn’t suspicious.
