Some residents of Uranium City are thankful to be alive today after the collapse of the local curling rink’s roof over the weekend.

Local man Wayne Augier says roughly 10 people were in the structure on Saturday for an event tied to the community’s winter festival, when he started hearing loud cracks coming from the roof.

The rink was eventually cleared.

Augier says about five minutes after the last person was out, that individual was getting into his truck when he heard the entire roof fall to the ice surface.

According to Augier, the rink has been around since the 1950s, and the beams looked like they were rotting because of water damage.

He also says there was quite a bit of snow on the roof from a heavy snowfall last month.
