An elder from the First Nations University of Canada says understanding the past could be a key to fighting diabetes.
Vicki Wilson is the keynote speaker at today’s Aboriginal gathering in Prince Albert hosted by the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Wilson says she grew up on the land and lived a healthy lifestyle as a younger person.
But she says times have changed for most people these days and diabetes has begun to thrive:
“Things have changed drastically. I’ve seen the changes that happened to, say, my grandparents . . . seems to have gotten worse as the generations came along. Now it’s really (a) kind of pandemic sort of thing, because our young people today — nobody’s teaching them good eating habits. There’s not enought activities, you know?”
Wilson says she sees a lot of students at FNUniv rushing to class while hastily eating junk food.
