The U.S. Space and Rocket Centre is inviting nine-year-old Aboriginal children to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

The camps have been running since 1982 — but this year, 12 scholarships are available to tribal groups across North America.

Centre spokesperson Tim Hall says the kids will get to try out equipment used by astronauts:

“They also, many times in the advanced courses, get to scuba dive to get an idea of what it’s like to be weightless.  There’s a one-sixth gravity chair — so you experience what gravity is like at one-sixth of your weight.  So, kids get a real great solid idea of what astronauts do when they go through astronaut training.”

To apply for Space Camp, any interested children can visit spacecamp.com and submit a short video on why they would like to attend.

The application deadline is May 15th.

The camps run throughout the year.
