The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations says it’s been an incredible three years in office.
Shawn Atleo is on the campaign trail today as he prepares to defend his position from seven challengers in next month’s AFN election.
Atleo says he has been touched by the resiliency of First Nations throughout Canada, including the survivors of the tornado on the Kawacatoose First Nation.
He insists he will continue to listen to the chiefs as he pushes Ottawa for advances in education and health, adding it’s important to push the current government at every level.
His camapaign was recently endorsed by Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau.
Atleo says he is not sure how that happened:
“I had heard that, as well — and I also heard he had sent out message about at least one other candidate. This isn’t about partisan politics. As I said earlier, I don’t carry a political affiliation.”
Atleo adds First Nations need to stand unified in the quest for treaty implementation.
The election takes place on July 18th.
Atleo’s challengers include Joan Jack, Bill Erasmus, Terrence Nelson, George Stanley, Pamela Palmater, Elaine Gabriel and Diane Kelly.
