The Cote First Nation has reached a land claims settlement with the federal government.

According to Aboriginal Affairs, the settlement includes approximately $130 million from Canada, minus some costs for negotiation.

The deal also includes provisions for the band to purchase 15,000 acres of land to add to the reserve.

A trust agreement on how the money will be used has also been set up.

Aboriginal Affairs says that was approved by the membership when they voted on the settlement agreement.

The settlement dates back to 1905 when the band was essentially forced to surrender a large portion of reserve land back to the government.
