A group of Aboriginal RCMP cadets will be making history this week as they attend the Back To Batoche Days celebrations.
The youth from Ile a la Crosse are the first Metis cadet corp to attend the event.
The group will be taking part in the Back To Batoche Days grand entry, volunteering and meeting with Metis veterans.
Organizer Angella McKay says since the group is based in the north, it is able to maintain a unique Metis influence:
“We really try to incorporate traditional teachings. We want to bring in the elders to help engage the youth into learning the traditional values and to really use our environment.”
McKay says the Ile a la Crosse cadet corp was organized to help youth develop a positive relationship with the RCMP, and it is the only one in the world to incorporate a Metis sash into its uniform.
