An opinion piece about last year’s infighting at the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has resulted in an award for a First Nations columnist from Saskatchewan.

Doug Cuthand has won the Native American Journalists Association’s annual award for best column.

The piece, entitled “FSIN Dragged Down By Bitter Politics”, appeared last fall in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix.

Cuthand says he has no regrets about writing his views on the “impeachment” of former FSIN chief Guy Lonechild.

He says he “found it a bit insincere on the part of the chiefs” when they used Lonechild’s legal troubles to oust him, when other chiefs have blemishes on their records.

This is an award Cuthand has won a few times before, but he says he has never been able to make it to the awards ceremony.

He has been writing his column for 20 years.

Cuthand’s work is also aired across the MBC Radio Network every Friday.
