A former Manitoba tribal chief wants a crack at leading the Assembly of First Nations.

Diane Kelly is one of seven people challenging incumbent National Chief Shawn Atleo for the leadership of the organization.

Kelly says she is tired of seeing resources extracted from First Nations land with little benefits paid back in return.

She wants the AFN to refocus itself on treaty implementation and better communication with First Nations.

For instance, Kelly says First Nations should be ratifying any education deals struck between the AFN and the federal government.

Other candidates in this month’s election include Bill Erasmus, George Stanley, Elaine Gabriel, Terrence Nelson, Pamela Palmater and Joan Jack.
