Environment officials say the smoky haze that has been experienced in much of Saskatchewan today is primarily from a major wildfire to the west of the province.
Spokesperson Jeanette Krayetski says the smoke is coming from a 100,000-hectare blaze in northwestern Alberta.
Krayetski says none of the 34 fires currently burning in this province are that large.
She expects the haze to remain over central and northern Saskatchewan for most of the day.
Parkland Ambulance in Prince Albert notes the situation is creating poor air quality in the city.
It says people with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD or bronchitis are already having a tough time due to the heat and high humidity — and now must contend with the additional smoke in the air.
Paramedics are asking them to stay indoors and limit activity, noting that even active individuals who might jog routinely would find today a little bit tougher due to the smoke in the air.
