A former residential school student says the government’s Independent Assessment Process has failed to give him and many other First Nations survivors what they are owed.
Lloyd Courtoreille lost his leg at the age of 10 after a farming accident at a residential school in Alberta.
He says the injury could have been prevented, noting he was working while unsupervised.
Courtoreille says he was kept in an infirmary for three days before being flown out to Edmonton, where doctors were forced to amputate because of the presence of gangrene.
He says he never got the compensation he should have received, and he is calling on the government to renegotiate with him and other former stuents who lost limbs or suffered serious injuries.
Courtoreille rallied yesterday outside the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton and is planning additional demonstrations in Regina and Winnipeg.
