The medium security unit of the federal penitentiary in Prince Albert remains under lockdown today.

The move follows a large fight which broke out at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary Monday evening, injuring seven inmates.

They are all recovering.

Correctional Service of Canada spokesperson Darcy Begrand says around 100 inmates were in the common area where the fight took place.

He says a typical lockdown lasts about three days — because staff have to thoroughly search each inmate’s cell for any contraband, and they also take measures to prevent retaliation among inmates.

Begrand says while the search is being done, no visits are allowed in the medium security unity.

Visits to the maximum security unit are not affected.
