Thirty-two candidates are officially in the running for next month’s Metis Nation – Saskatchewan election.
Six of them are running for president.
Incumbent leader Robert Doucette is being challenged by Saskatoon’s Maureen Belanger, Ray Laliberte of Buffalo Narrows, Bryan Lee of Christopher Lake, Wayne McKenzie of Regina and Glaslyn resident Mavis Taylor.
Running for vice-president is Prince Albert’s Darren Deschambeault, Dale McAuley of Cumberland House and Gerald Morin of Saskatoon.
Incumbent provincial secretary Max Morin will be attempting to fend off challenges from May Henderson of Saskatoon, Roxanne Kennedy of North Battleford and Tammy Mah of Prince Albert.
Guy Bouvier of Meadow Lake, Louis Gardiner of Ile-a-la-Crosse and Morley Norton of Regina are running for treasurer.
In the north, neither Al Rivard of Northern Region 1 nor Marlene Hanson of Northern Region 2 are seeking re-election as area directors.
According to the chief electoral officer, no nominations were received for area director in Northern Region 1 — while in Northern Region 2, just one person entered the race. Chester Herman has been acclaimed to the position.
Four other candidates have been acclaimed as area directors in other parts of the province: Lennard Morin in Eastern Region 1, Helene Johnson in Eastern Region 2, Billy Kennedy in Western Region 1A and Lela Arnold in Western Region 3.
Meantime, two candidates are competing for area director in Northern Region 3 — Glen Hector McCallum of Pinehouse Lake and Ric Richardson of Green Lake.
The deadline for submitting nominations was Wednesday afternoon.
The MN-S election takes place on September 8th.
