First Nations from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are joining together for a challenge of the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement of 1930.
Aboriginal leaders wrapped up a summit on the issue in Prince Albert yesterday.
They all agree the government must start including them more fully in development of uranium, oil and hydroelectric power.
What is not decided is the best way to go about doing that.
Some say litigation makes the most sense, while others favor negotiations or an appeal to the international community.
Prince Albert Grand Council Chief Ron Michel says while litigation is one possibility, that approach worries some of the delegates:
“A lot of the elders that spoke said that bringing it court might not be the answer — it might be a second option.”
The final summit will be held in Alberta next year.
It is at that meeting that a strategy is expected to be implemented.
