A bigger population on the Mosquito First Nation is forcing the band to expand its water distribution system.
Later this month, construction is expected to begin on an approximately $4-million water system upgrade project.
Mosquito’s water treatment plant and reservoir are being expanded, and it’s getting new equipment — including reverse osmosis systems — to ensure it has good water.
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development spokesman Rod Desnomie says it’s needed.
Since the current plant was built in 1995, the band’s population has grown from 484 people to 711, as of April 30th of this year.
The expansion is slated to be completed a year from now.
The First Nation is contributing $318,000 to the project.
The federal government is picking up the rest of the cost.
