The Metis Nation – Saskatchewan held its province-wide elections yesterday — and incumbent president Robert Doucette won another term in office by beating five challengers.
In unofficial results, Doucette received 1,015 votes out of the 2,905 ballots cast for president. His closest competition, Mavis Taylor, finished with 548 votes.
Former Metis National Council president Gerald Morin is the new MN-S vice-president. Morin received 1,221 votes — 429 more than runner-up Dale McAuley.
Louis Gardiner won the election for MN-S treasurer, finishing with an even 1,400 votes. Guy Bouvier was the runner-up with 918 votes.
Meanwhile, it appears there will be a recount in the vote for the office of MN-S secretary. May Henderson finished with the most votes, but because her margin of victory over runner-up Tammy Mah was less than 2% — the chief electoral officer says a court application will be made for a judicial recount if the official results are that close.
There were also five area director elections held Saturday. Glen Hector McCallum of Pinehouse won the race in Northern Region 3. Meadow Lake’s Michael Bell was victorious in Western Region 1. Prince Albert’s Darlene McKay won the vote for Western Region 2 area director. In Western Region 2A, Saskatoon’s Penny Hurton finished with the most votes. And Yorkton’s Derek (Porky) Langan was the winner in Eastern Region 2A.
