The SJHL has reportedly told the Onion Lake Cree Nation it won’t be getting an expansion team.
The community had applied for a franchise, but was apparently told no — over concerns there’s not enough people living in the community.
The SJHL wants at least 5,000 people in each centre hosting a team.
A councilor with the band says the official count is just under four thousand people.
However Tom Chief explains that number is actually much closer to 52 or 54 hundred when you include all the people living in the area who are non-status.
He says the band is looking at its options.
