Members of the Moosomin First Nation are deciding if they want to hold an election for chief.

MBC has confirmed Chief Elliot Kahpeaysewat has been removed from office for bribing voters.

Aboriginal Affairs says the decision to remove Kahpeaysewat was made after it received an appeal of the band’s January 22nd, 2011 election and undertook an independent investigation.

As a result of the investigator’s report and supporting evidence provided with the appeal, the department concluded there was enough evidence to show vote Kahpeaysewat did buy votes. That’s a violation of the Indian Act.

Aboriginal Affairs says there are enough band councillors left to run things — so it is up to the band to hold an election if they want to.

Kahpeaysewat won the election for chief by 73 votes.
