A Winnipeg writer says Aboriginal musicians should be paying attention to a recent hit by a Korean pop star.

Colleen Simard, an Ojibway mother of two, says she’s amazed by the success of the hit “Gangnam Style”.

She feels Aboriginal people would benefit if more of their songs were sung in their Native tongue along to modern music:

“I’m thinking that if we could write some really catchy pop songs in our languages, they would really catch on — they’d be popular with everyone, especially our kids, who need to learn their language.”

Simard says Gangnam Style is a huge hit in North America even though it’s sung in Korean.

She says that should be food for thought for Aboriginal musicians.
