The Yorkton Tribal Council is holding a two-day brainstorming session today on how to get more young people off the couch.

The Saskatoon Inn is the setting for the Regional Active Measures Conference.

Organizer Sabrina Sparvier says the YTC is working hard to get people off social-assistance and into the workforce.

She says they have established two career centres to help bands to the north and south:

“I think it’s a relatively new strategy and it’s an opportunity for people to come out and learn more about it.  It’s just another avenue to enhance the support services that are already on-going within the community.”

She adds active-measures can include anything from a referral service to simply telling what kids what kind of opportunities are out there for them.

She adds the main demographic of people being targeted is those who are on social-assistance as well as 18 to 25 year-olds.

Representatives from different First Nations and various levels of government and industry are expected at the conference.
