Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says she feel yesterday’s US presidential election victory by Barack Obama is better for the climate than if Mitt Romney had won — but she’s not sure by how much.

May says Obama was largely a disappointment in his first term when it came to implementing large promises on environmental protection.

She hopes he takes advice from First Nations going forward:

“Maybe now that Barack Obama has a second term, maybe he’ll listen to the voices of First Nations on Turtle Island and say, ‘Right.  The US has to show some leadership here.  We can’t continually talk about opening up new drilling areas and offshore areas and Arctic areas for oil and gas drilling’.”

May adds a Gwich’in First Nation in the Yukon is deeply worried about the potential impact a proposed pipeline in Alaska could have on traditional calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd.
