A North Battleford man convicted of murdering two men with an axe has been given permission to move back to his hometown.
Layne Bobby Larose murdered David Kennedy and Hughie Sayers in May, 2002.
Later, he was found not criminally responsible for their deaths because he was mentally ill.
Initially, he was staying at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford.
Recently, Larose has been living in Saskatoon — but he applied to move back to North Battleford because he couldn’t find a job.
A review board granted that request, but with several conditions.
For example, he must continue to take treatment and submit to drug tests.
His lawyer, George Combe, says the review board allowed him to make the move because it is satisfied that he is doing well.
“The board were satisfied that he had been doing very well in the street, and that his risk to the public was significantly reduced.”
Combe confirms Larose has already been allowed in the Battlefords by himself.
“While he was residing at the hospital, he was permitted to go into the Battlefords community — and he was permitted to do those things to make sure there were no problems when he was out and about.”
Family members of the victims are afraid that he might harm somone again.
The board will review its decision in October, 2013.
