A neighborhood watch program on the Cumberland House First Nation is taking a bite out of crime.

Since it began a year and a half ago, organizers of the safety measure, say crime on the reserve has dropped by 30%.

Justice worker Maggie Fiddler says each street has someone watching out for nearby residents:

“The block-captain is the main person to call on the street that you live on if there’s any suspicious activities in the neighborhood.”

Fiddler says the idea for the watch came from a Sergeant in the RCMP who was stationed in the community in 2010.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday to commemorate the service which is now officially recognized.
